USITUA Workshop to Address Top Telecom and Internet Policy Issues
The United States International Telecommunications Union Association (USITUA) will be holding a workshop and lunch on September 8, 2010, to review major issues in telecom and Internet policy.
Issues addressed at the workshop are expected to be the main topics of discussion at the upcoming ITU Plenipotentiary Conference on October 4-22, 2010, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Many officials of the U.S. government will give their views at the workshop, including Ambassador Phil Verveer of the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Verveer is head of the U.S. delegation to the Plenipotentiary.

EPA and DOT Propose New Fuel Economy Labels
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are seeking comments on new proposed fuel economy labels that would represent the most dramatic overhaul in the 30-year history of fuel economy labeling.
Two new label designs are being proposed for comment. One prominently features a letter grade to communicate the vehicle's overall fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions performance, and provides an estimate of the expected fuel cost savings over five years compared to an average gasoline-powered vehicle of the same model year. The second retains the current label's focus on miles per gallon (MPG) and annual fuel costs while updating the overall design and adding the required new comparison information on fuel economy and emissions.

NFPA Offers Safety Tips for College Students
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is offering a list of safety tips for students moving to college dormitories or off-campus housing this fall.
Tips include testing fire alarms, choosing housing with a full sprinkler system, smoking only outside or in designated areas, and checking electrical cords for cracks, breaks, damage, or overheating. Many additional tips related to fire safety, escaping in case of emergency, smoking, cooking, using candles, and electrical equipment are provided.

ANS Launches Blog to Address Topical Nuclear Issues
The American Nuclear Society (ANS), an ANSI member, has launched a new blog called the ANS Nuclear Café. The site provides posts from numerous sources that discuss a variety of topics pertinent to the nuclear industry.
Topics that the blog will address include federal affairs related to nuclear science and technology; discussions of public information programs; alerts and links to online discussions on nuclear topics; developments and updates related to ANS Professional Divisions; and exclusive content provided by ANS members on topics of interest to ANS members.

CASRO Internship Program Matches College Students with Research Companies
The Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO), an ANSI member, has launched an internship program that matches motivated college students with research companies to provide diverse internship opportunities.
Both students and employers benefit from the program, which gives young researchers valuable on-the-job experience while allowing them to contribute their time, enthusiasm, and intelligence to the research projects of participating companies.

SAE International Launches Member Networking Site
SAE International, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has launched a new networking site for its members. The site, EngineerXchange, offers powerful new networking tools, job listings, career counseling and management tools, and advance access to SAE technical information.
"This will be a site where members can come for advice and mentoring issues," said Bill Cariello, manager of web strategy for SAE International, in an SAE news release. "That's the secret sauce of EngineerXchange. We are less transactional and more peer-to-peer. Retired members can help younger members with career path decisions. It's really a community platform."
