ISO Guide 41 on Packaging Revised to Meet Consumers' Growing Needs

Updated Guide Features Safer, More Informative Packaging

The newly revised ISO/IEC Guide 41- Packaging- Recommendations for addressing consumer needs will provide better guidance to product designers, manufacturers, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in decision making related to packagingincluding standards developers. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the document is available in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) webstore. ANSI is the U.S. member body to ISO.

About ISO/IEC Guide 41: 2018

This document provides guidance to:


  • Product designers, manufacturers and others engaged in the process of making decisions concerning packaging;

  • Those drafting standards to meet the packaging needs and requirements of consumers as prospective purchasers of products;

  • Committees preparing standards for consumer products or services;

  • Regulators

The updated version of the guide, developed by ISO/COPOLCO Working Group 16, the ISO committee on consumer policy, features more detailed information on risk assessment, vulnerable consumers' needs, cost reduction, use of resources, and suitability for intended purpose, and recycling, according to Christine Heemskerk, Co-Convenor of the ISO Working Group, as ISO reports.
