NACLA Recognizes Fifth Accreditation Body

Washington, DC, Feb 05, 2004

The National Cooperation for Laboratory Accreditation (NACLA) reported today that it has recognized the Performance Review Institute's Nadcap laboratory accreditation program as a competent laboratory accreditation body (AB). Nadcap has demonstrated to a NACLA evaluation team that it complies with NACLA procedures and the international standard for a competent AB (ISO/IEC Guide 58).

Nadcap was established in 1990 by the Performance Review Institute (PRI), which is an affiliate of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). PRI-Nadcap provides accreditation services for most of the world's aerospace prime manufacturers, such as Airbus, Boeing, GE and Pratt & Whitney. NACLA has recognized PRI-Nadcap's competence in the following accreditation area: materials testing for mechanical and chemical properties in the chemical, mechanical, metallography, microhardness, hardness, corrosion/stress corrosion and NDT fields.

PRI-Nadcap becomes the fifth AB recognized by NACLA. The other four are the American Industrial Hygiene Assn. (AIHA); the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA); the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP); and the International Accreditation Service (IAS). The scopes for which these ABs are recognized will be found on the NACLA web site (

NACLA-recognized ABs sign a mutual recognition arrangement (MRA), whereby they commit: to use equivalent procedures in the accreditation of laboratories; to recognize the operation of other signatory ABs as having met the same technical requirements for competence; and to accept the test reports and calibration certificates issued by signatory-accredited calibration and testing laboratories.

NACLA is a private-sector, not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to coordinate and promote consistency in U.S. laboratory accreditation activities by evaluating all ABs that apply for recognition and inviting those found competent to sign the NACLA MRA. Reinaldo Figueiredo, ANSI program director for product certification, serves on the NACLA board of directors.
