ISO Brochure Promotes Consumer Participation in Standards Development

A new brochure published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides information about the benefits of standards to consumers and informs consumers on how to get involved in the development of voluntary consensus standards. Developed by ISO's Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO), “Your voice matters - Why consumers need to participate in standards-making…and how to get involved,” includes personal observations of consumer representatives who have been involved in standardization and contributed to making consumer products safer and more reliable.

Among the contributors to the development of this publication was the Consumer Interest Forum (CIF) of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which is the official U.S. member body to ISO. James McCabe, ANSI director of consumer relations and public policy, explained, “ANSI’s Consumer Interest Forum works to educate consumers regarding standardization and to promote the representation of consumer interests in voluntary standards and conformity assessment activities. The new ISO brochure provides in clear, easy-to-understand language how standards affect consumers and how consumers can positively influence the content of standards at the national and international level.”
