DOC Seeking Stakeholder Input on Advancement of Internet of Things (IoT)

5/23/2016

ANSI Encourages Standardization Community to Submit Comments

As part of the U.S. Department of Commerce's (DOC's) Digital Economy Agenda, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has issued a notice and request for public comments related to a review of the current technological and policy landscape for the Internet of Things (IoT). The American National Standards Institute encourages its members and all U.S. standardization stakeholders to review the notice, entitled "The Benefits, Challenges, and Potential Roles for the Government in Fostering the Advancement of the Internet of Things," and submit comments on this critical and rapidly expanding technology area. The DOC will consider the input received as it develops a broader agenda for fostering the advancement of IoT innovation to promote economic growth and opportunity for the nation.

IoT encompasses the broad category of devices, appliances, and objects that can be connected via the Internet. As part of its review of the IoT landscape, DOC will draft a "green paper" identifying key issues affecting deployment of these technologies, potential benefits and challenges, and possible roles for the government in advancing IoT technology development in partnership with the private sector. According to the NTIA notice, "The U.S. government will need to work with stakeholders to develop industry-driven solutions," and ANSI supports the key role of standards and conformity assessment in those solutions.

Standardization stakeholders are strongly encouraged to submit comments directly to NTIA at [email protected] by the deadline of June 2 at 5 p.m. ET.

More information related to the NTIA's request can be found on https://www.ntia.doc.gov/category/internet-things.
