NSF International to Partner with Philippine Government to Improve Water Supply

NSF International has entered into an agreement with the Philippine government to assist in the development of water treatment standards that will raise the quality of the nation’s water supply. The standards will be used as the benchmark for all water treatment devices tested, certified and evaluated in the Philippines.

"Water quality is a serious health issue for many people," said Agnette P. Peralta, director of the Philippine Bureau of Health Devices and Technology, Department of Health (DOH-BHDT)—the regulatory office with which NSF will partner. "Having standards for the testing and certification of water treatment devices is vitally important to the consumers who must decide which product will provide them with improved water quality."

A member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), NSF International helps to protect public health and safety by certifying products and writing standards for food, water, air and consumer goods. Under the agreement, six NSF American National Standards will be used as the foundation for developing the Philippine standards:

  • NSF/ANSI 42-2002e, Drinking Water Treatment Units - Aesthetic Effects
    The systems addressed in this document are designed to reduce soluble or particulate substances in drinking water that are microbiologically safe but that may negatively influence public acceptance of the water.

  • NSF/ANSI 44-2004, Residential Cation Exchange Water Softeners
    The residential cation exchange water softeners covered in this standard are designed to reduce water hardness and specific contaminants from drinking water supplies considered microbiologically safe.

  • NSF/ANSI 53-2006, Drinking Water Treatment Units - Health Effects
    This standard addresses treatment systems used to reduce microbiological, chemical, or particulate substances that are recognized as established or potential health hazards.

  • NSF/ANSI 55-2004, Ultraviolet Microbiological Water Treatment Units
    This document encompasses two classes of ultraviolet microbiological water treatment systems and components. The first are systems that inactivate or remove microorganisms from contaminated, non-turbid water; the second are systems that provide supplemental treatment of disinfected drinking water that has been tested and deemed acceptable for public consumption by state or local health agencies.

  • NSF/ANSI 58-2006, Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Treatment Systems
    The reverse osmosis drinking water treatment systems covered in this standard reduce total dissolved solids, nitrates, copper, asbestos and other contaminants that may be present in drinking water supplies otherwise considered to be microbiologically safe.

  • NSF/ANSI 62-2004, Drinking Water Distillation Systems
    This standard defines requirements for distillation systems designed to reduce microbiological and chemical contaminants, including total arsenic and mercury, from drinking water supplies. The systems covered by this standard are not intended to convert wastewater to microbiologically potable water.

Once national standards have been set, NSF will partner with local manufacturers to provide testing and certification services that determine conformity with the standards.
