Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Recipients Announced

ANSI Members Boeing and Caterpillar Among Winners

New York, Nov 26, 2003

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) members The Boeing Company and Caterpillar Inc. are among the winners of the 2003 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement. The award is traditionally presented by the President of the United States at a special ceremony in Washington, DC, which will take place in 2004.

The Baldrige National Quality Program (BNQP), founded in 1987, is a public-private partnership designed to improve the performance of U.S. organizations. Named for former Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige, the program develops and disseminates the Criteria for Performance Excellence, which are the basis for self-assessments and for evaluating organizations for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Presented annually since 1988, the award may be presented to five types of organizations: manufacturers, service companies, small businesses, education organizations and health care organizations.

Boeing Aerospace Support was one of the two organizations selected in the service category of the Baldrige Award, and one of seven of this year's original 68 applicants. This is the second Baldrige Award received by Boeing. In 1998, the Boeing Airlift & Tanker organization was a Baldrige recipient in the manufacturing category.

Aerospace Support, part of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, provides a full range of support products and services – including maintenance, modifications, training, spares and logistics services – to reduce life-cycle costs and increase the effectiveness of aircraft and other military systems fielded around the globe. A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is one of the world's largest space and defense businesses.

Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., another ANSI member, also earned the honor in the service category. Cat Financial offers a wide range of financing alternatives for Caterpillar® machinery and engines and Solar® gas turbines, as well as other equipment and marine vessels. Cat Financial was formed in Peoria, Illinois, in 1981 to provide lease financing for Caterpillar lift trucks. By 1985, the organization had expanded its services to support the entire Cat® product line.

Cat Financial is the second Caterpillar subsidiary to receive the Baldridge Award, with San Diego-based Solar Turbines Inc., a leading provider of industrial gas turbines for use in power generation, natural gas compression, and pumping systems, receiving the honor in 1998.

The Baldrige Program is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Technology Administration, in conjunction with the private sector. Additional information is available at the BNQP website.
