People on the Move

New York, Aug 24, 2007

People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community.

William H. Banzhaf, president and CEO of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI, Inc.) since 2002, recently retired after five years of service. Under Banzhof’s leadership, SFI partnered with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to launch an accreditation service to strengthen sustainable forest management practices.

The SFI certification program encompasses more than 133 million certified acres across the United States and Canada and includes more than 200 program participants. The ANSI-SFI partnership assures customers and consumers that suppliers are respectful of environmental concerns and committed to the use of resources from well-managed forests.

Other highlights during his tenure include the development of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard and garnering the endorsement of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). A certified forester, Banzhaf previously served as chief executive officer of the Society of American Foresters.

Kathy Abusow, a recognized expert on certification standards and marketplace issues ranging from procurement policy design to green building rating tools, will take up the reins as the new president and chief executive officer of SFI.

For the past fifteen years, she operated Abusow International Ltd., a forest certification and market acceptance consultancy. Abusow has served as an advisor on sustainable forest management certification, standards development, accreditation, government procurement, and marketplace acceptance of certified forest products. She has also worked closely with the Forest Stewardship Council—Canada on updating chain of custody certificates and the FSC Controlled Wood standard’s application in a Canadian context.

Abusow earned a master’s degree from Harvard University with a concentration in sustainable development in the forest sector.
