ANSI Marks U.S. Celebration of World Accreditation Day

6/09/2010

Steven T. Peluso, Esq., and Brian Inamine, Esq., win ANSI paper competition

Today marks the worldwide celebration of World Accreditation Day, an event launched in 2008 by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). Each year on June 9, IAF and ILAC invite their national representatives from around the world to mark the occasion with dedicated celebrations honoring the important role that accreditation plays in the global standards and conformity assessment community.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is honoring this occasion by announcing the winner of the 2010 U.S. Celebration of World Accreditation Day paper competition. In March, the Institute invited interested parties to submit papers highlighting the value of accreditation in the global marketplace. [see related article]

ANSI is pleased to announce that Steven T. Peluso, Esq., and Brian Inamine, Esq., were awarded first place for their paper, "Accreditation as Facilitator of Delivery of Professional Services Internationally: What Would a Workable Model Look Like?"

"On behalf of the members, Board of Directors, and staff of the American National Standards Institute, I offer my congratulations to Mr. Peluso and Mr. Inamine for their prize-winning paper," said Lane Hallenbeck, ANSI vice president of accreditation services. "Their entry addressed the use of accreditation in promoting success and satisfaction for international and long-distance service provision, reflecting the spirit of the U.S. Celebration of World Accreditation Day in communicating the importance of third-party accreditation."

Mr. Peluso is general counsel for the Professional Examination Service. He holds a Juris Doctor from St. John's School of Law and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School, and is a member of ANSI's Personnel Certification Accreditation Committee. Mr. Inamine is a shareholder in the Labor and Employment Group of the national law firm LeClairRyan LLP, and is based in the firm's Los Angeles office.

Mr. Peluso and Mr. Inamine were awarded $1,000 for the winning submission, which was chosen by a jury of representatives from ANSI accreditation committees. ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to read the paper, which is publicly available on the Institute's online library.

Around the world, international specifiers, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders are celebrating World Accreditation Day through their own promotional events, seminars for industry and regulatory officials, and press campaigns. The theme of this year's celebration is "Global Acceptance," highlighting the importance of global acceptance of accredited certificates as a means to promote international business and to protect public interests.

A number of major international organizations have recognized the value of World Accreditation Day, including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
