Proposed Field of Technical Activity to Focus on Wastewater Sanitation

10/04/2010

ANSI seeks comments by November 5

KEBS, the Kenyan member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has submitted a proposal to ISO for a new field of technical activity on domestic and communal wastewater sanitation. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by November 5, 2010.

According to the new work item proposal, the activity would address areas of standardization including (but not limited to) amenities for the safe disposal of human wastes and gray water, such as septic tanks, ecological sanitation facilities, and dry toilets, and the environmentally sound transportation and reuse of the human waste. It will also include appropriate technological methods of treatment of the wastes, as well as sanitation during emergency situations caused by natural disasters. Excluded from the proposed standard are municipal and industrial wastewaters, which are not currently addressed by any ISO technical committee (TC).

All comments should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]). Feedback received by the November 5 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.
