ITU-T Invites Comments and Participation on Standardization Work for Internet of Things and Smart Cities and Communities

12/18/2015

The International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) recently established a new Study Group 20 (ITU-T SG20) on Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications including smart cities and communities (SC&C). A first meeting was held October 19-23, 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland. ITU-T SG20 develops international standards to enable the coordinated development of IoT technologies, including machine-to-machine communications and ubiquitous sensor networks. A central part of this study is the standardization of end-to-end architectures for IoT, and mechanisms for the interoperability of IoT applications and datasets employed by various vertically oriented industry sectors.

ITU-T SG20 is the parent of the ITU-T Joint Coordination Activity on Internet of Things (JCA-IoT) and SC&C. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), along with a number of standards developing organizations (SDOs), forums, and consortia, has been invited to participate in this work and to provide feedback on the ITU-T JCA-IoT and SC&C standards roadmap, which aims to support coordination not only within the ITU but also among SDOs. ITU-T has provided a template for submitting comments on the roadmap. Comments can be sent directly to [email protected].

ANSI also encourages U.S. stakeholders who may be interested in participating in the ITU-T SG20 work to contact Beth Bacon, telecommunications policy specialist, Office of International Affairs, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), U.S. Department of Commerce at [email protected]; tel: (202) 482-2097. NTIA coordinates prep calls to develop U.S. contributions. A next meeting of ITU-T SG20 will take place January 18-26, 2016, in Singapore.
