ANSI Partners with DHS to Support National Preparedness Month

New York, Aug 31, 2007

During the month of September, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in support of National Preparedness Month. ANSI joins nearly 1,600 national, regional, state and local organizations in the effort to educate the public about the importance of emergency preparedness, and to promote individual action throughout the year.

Now in its fourth year as a partnering organization, ANSI’s Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) will hold its sixth plenary meeting on October 3-4, 2007, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. Welcoming both ANSI-HSSP members and newcomers to the homeland security community, the program will highlight standards for preparedness, risk, response, and recovery, as well as current domestic and international standardization initiatives.

The plenary will be held in conjunction with the October 4-5 ISO/IEC/ITU World Standards Cooperation (WSC) Workshop on Transit Security, which will address the strategic role for international standards and conformity assessment programs in the area of public transit security, encompassing urban, suburban and regional commuter transportation by bus, rail and the land side of urban ferry operations.

The American Bankers Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association, Deere & Company, Hewlett-Packard Company, Microsoft, Motorola, the National Fire Protection Association, and Sony Electronics are among the ANSI members that have joined this nationwide effort to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and schools.

Throughout September, these organizations will provide information, sponsor activities, and host events across the nation to promote awareness and encourage action in their customers, members, employees, stakeholders and communities. A full list of partnering organizations can be found on the National Preparedness Month website.
