ANSI's Legal Issues Forum Draws 100 Professionals for Discussion of Legal, Societal, and Ethical Implications of Artificial Intelligence

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) convened two panels of experts to examine and engage ANSI members and guests on the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) during the Legal Issues Forum, an annual event held during World Standards Week in in Washington, DC, on October 16, 2018. The panels discussed varied and multiple uses of AI in manufacturing, government, and legal work.

The first panel focused on the Ethical and Societal Perspectives on AI, and included speakers Michael Fitzpatrick, head of regulatory advocacy at GE, Jeff Marootian, director of the Washington, D.C. Department of Transportation, Bendert Zevenbergen, research fellow, The Center for Information Technology Policy, Princeton University, and Michelle Six, partner, Kirkland & Ellis. The session was moderated by Julia Brickell, general counsel, H5. These panelists explored the role that standards play in current and future applications of machine learning and smart technologies, and the societal impact of AI on products and services.

The second panel focused on the Applications of AILegal and Business Considerations, and included moderator Ali Zaidi, of counsel, Kirkland & Ellis, and panelists Geoffrey Drake, partner, trial and global disputes practice, King and Spalding, David Gordon, general counsel, Jackson Lewis, Marc Zwillinger, founder, ZwillGen, and Amy Mudge, partner, Venable.. These Panelists spoke about the legal implications of AI, including how risk will likely be allocated among major stakeholders when AI-related things go wrong, and the availability of insurance to cover such risks..

Approximately 100 ANSI members and interested third parties attended the Forum. ANSI's president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia thanked the panelists for their dialogue, noting that "the promise of AI is that it will fix our errors and enhance our lives." He encouraged the standardization community to engage in and support AI development.
