Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Confined Spaces to Cryptographic Message Syntax


In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Confined Spaces

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) defines a "confined space" as a space which, by design, has limited openings for entry and exit, unfavorable natural ventilation which could contain or produce dangerous air contaminants, and which is not intended for continuous worker occupancy. Various industries including manufacturing, mining, and construction require workers to get the job done in confined spaces such as storage tanks, pipelines, tunnels, and more, which can lead to injuries and fatalities without proper precautions.

CSA Z1006-16, Management of work in confined spaces, specifies requirements for and provides guidance on the activities required to manage all aspects of work in confined spaces in accordance with the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and management principles, such as those set out in CAN/CSA-Z1000, Occupational health and safety management. The standard specifies requirements concerning management commitment, leadership, and participation, assignment of roles and responsibilities, identification of confined spaces, identification of hazards, risk assessment, selection and application of controls, design considerations, training, monitoring and measurement, emergency response, documentation, internal audits, and management reviews.

With the previous version released in 2010, CSA Z1006 is part of the CSA portfolio of occupational health & safety (OH&S) management systems standards, based on the foundation of CSA Z1000.

Cryptographic Message Syntax

Cryptographic message syntax is used to digitally sign, digest, authenticate, or encrypt arbitrary message content.

The American National Standard (ANS) ANSI X9.73-2017, Cryptographic Message Syntax-ASN.1 and XML, specifies a cryptographic syntax scheme that can be used to protect financial transactions, files, and other messages from unauthorized disclosure and modification. The cryptographic syntax scheme is based on an abstract cryptographic message syntax (CMS) schema whose concrete values can be represented using either a compact, efficient, binary encoding, or as a flexible, human-readable, XML markup format.

ANSI Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X9 published the standard, a revision of the 2010 edition.
