November 20 Presentation and Open Discussion with ANSI's Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities
On November 20 the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a free informational webinar from 2 to 3 pm EDT on the Draft Framework for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cyber-Physical Systems Public Working Group (CPS PWG), and currently out for public comment through November 2 [see related news item]. The webinar's featured speakers will be David Wollman, Ph.D., deputy director of the NIST Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems Program Office, and Martin Burns, Ph.D., senior researcher in the NIST Engineering Laboratory.
Formed in 2014, the NIST CPS PWG brings together experts to help define and shape key aspects of CPS to accelerate its development and implementation within multiple sectors of our economy. CPS or "smart" systems are co-engineered interacting networks of physical and computational components. These systems will provide the foundation for critical infrastructure, form the basis of emerging and future smart services, and improve quality of life in many areas such as advances in personalized health care, emergency response, traffic flow management, and electric power generation and delivery, among many other areas now just being envisioned.
Dr. David Wollman leads efforts to coordinate and accelerate the private-sector development of smart grid interoperability standards, including as the NIST ex-officio Board member on the
Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. Dr. Wollman is also expanding NIST's coordination activities in the more general area of CPS through his leadership of the NIST CPS PWG. Previously, he managed NIST's efforts to maintain and advance the U.S. electrical standards and metrology supporting the electric power industry, in addition to serving as scientific advisor, program analyst, and bench-level scientist. Dr. Wollman received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a B.S. in physics from Michigan State University. He has received many awards, including two U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medals, one Silver Medal, and the NIST Applied Research Award, and he has received three U.S. patents.
Dr. Martin Burns has been driving standards and implementations of standards in the smart grid and home and building automation, i.e., the Internet of Things (IoT), for over 35 years. Dr. Burns applies his skills and experience as part of the Smart Grid and Cyber Physical Systems Program Office specializing in data interoperability, IoT architecture, and federated testbeds. He has led technical developments in support of the
Green Button Initiative in which NIST has facilitated the establishment of an ecosystem in the exchange of energy data among utilities, consumers, and third parties throughout the United States, Canada, and in Europe. He has been instrumental in the guidance and creation of the NIST CPS PWS Framework for Cyber-Physical Systems. Additionally, he is working to apply the framework and related technologies to the design of a federated test bed architecture for CPS to allow collaborations within NIST and with academic, government, and commercial colleagues around the globe. Dr. Burns holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University.
The November 20 presentation is part of an ongoing series of monthly webinars hosted by the
ANSI Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC), a forum for information sharing among members of the standardization community, representatives of municipal government, and experts in urban infrastructure planning and sustainable development.
