ANSI Call for Participation: Survey of Standards Education Outreach

New York, Jul 26, 2005

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) believes that educating students on the strategic impact of standards and conformity assessment on the marketplace will give the next generation a competitive edge when entering the workforce. The ANSI Committee on Education’s university outreach program aims to raise awareness of standards and incorporate standards-related information into the curriculum of colleges and universities.

A key component of the university outreach program is the pooling of existing resources in the standardization community. ANSI is encouraging standards developing organizations (SDOs) and other members of the standards community to assist in providing educational and technical content that will help to support this initiative. Completion of the Survey of Standards Education Outreach will help to identify these existing resources and facilitate the Committee’s goal of enabling university faculty to bring standards into their courses. Responses to the survey are requested by Monday, August 22, 2005.

"It is imperative that we identify what educational resources already exist within the standards community and what resources still need to be developed to support these - and other - universities with the tools they need to introduce standards into the classroom," says Dr. William Kelly, chairman of the ANSI Committee on Education.

SDOs and other members of the standards and conformity assessment community can get involved and support the university outreach effort by:

  • Completing the brief survey on educational activities your organization is currently engaged in
  • Designating a point of contact and identifying resources within your organization that could be made available to university faculty and students
  • Indicating to ANSI all areas of expertise in which your organization would be willing to serve as a resource to relevant university programs eager to introduce standards

ANSI was charged by the National Standards Strategy for the United States (2000) to “develop a program to introduce standards and their effect on technology and trade into university curricula in business, engineering, and public administration.” The formation of the Committee of Education and the development of the university outreach program is part of the Institute’s answer to that call. The committee is developing a pilot program that will provide case studies, model tutorials, and other educational resources to university faculty. ANSI also plans to make complimentary standards available to universities from certain of the Institute's collections.
