The U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC)'s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) member, has announced the appointment of George Arnold, Ph.D., as director of NIST's Standards Coordination Office. Dr. Arnold replaced Mary Saunders, who left the position to become NIST's associate director for management resources (ADMR). In his new position, Dr. Arnold heads up NIST's work with the larger voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment communities and oversees the NIST Quality Management System, the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, and the NIST Standards Services Program, among other responsibilities.

Dr. Arnold previously served as the national coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability at NIST, where he worked to advance the development of standards underpinning the nation's Smart Grid, a modernization of the electricity delivery system to monitor, protect, and automatically optimize the operation of its interconnected elements. Prior to that, Dr. Arnold served as NIST's deputy director of technology services and worked at Lucent Technologies' Bell Laboratories as vice president for global standards efforts. Dr. Arnold served as the chair of the ANSI Board of Directors from 2003 to 2005, and as the president of ANSI member and accredited standards developer IEEE's IEEE Standards Association from 2007 to 2008. He received his doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from New York's Columbia University.

NIST, a non-regulatory agency of the DoC, is tasked with promoting U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness through the advancement of measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST plays an important role in coordinating standards and conformity assessment interests of U.S. federal government agencies.

The Environmental Industry Associations (EIA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has named Eric Schweitzer to the position of standards and statistics programs manager. Mr. Schweitzer will oversee the development of new standards for safety and performance through the Waste Equipment Technology Association (WASTEC) - an EIA subsidiary organization which acts as the Secretariat for ANSI Accredited Standards Committee Z245 on equipment technology and operations for wastes and recyclable materials - among other duties.

Mr. Schweitzer previously led the standards and emerging technologies programs at ANSI member and accredited standards developer the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and oversaw safety programs for the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). He received his bachelor of arts degree in communication research from the University of Maryland, College Park.

EIA is a nonprofit trade group representing organizations in the private recycling and solid waste industries through the work of its two sub-associations, WASTEC and the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA).
