Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Solid State Lighting Products to Portable Pools

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Solid State Lighting Products
When a person enters their home or office, the first thing they do is turn on an overhead light or freestanding lamp. With energy prices pushing ever higher, consumers are always looking for new ways to conserve power and save money on their electric bill. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, recently published NEMA ANSLG C78.377-2008, Specifications for the Chromaticity of Solid State Lighting Products for Electric Lamps, a new American National Standard developed for general indoor lighting applications.

Solid state lighting (SSL) refers to a type of illumination that is emitted from a solid object, such as a light-emitting diode (LED). A highly efficient technology, SSL stands in contrast to traditional incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps, where light is emitted from a vacuum or gas tube.

The purpose of NEMA ANSLG C78.377-2008 is to specify the range of chromaticities - or color temperatures - recommended for general lighting with solid state lighting (SSL) products. The standard also offers methods for communicating white light chromaticities to consumers, helping them to compare and decide between warm and cool tones.

NEMA ANSLG C78.377-2008 is arranged in two parts: part one includes information on the chromaticity specification basis, details of SSL chromaticity requirements, and definition and specification of the color rendering index; part two provides an informative annex, background information, and technical parameters under which the chromaticity specification was developed.

The new standard applies to LED-based SSL products with control electronics that require only an AC main or DC voltage power supply to operate. The document does not cover products that require external operating circuits, additional external heat sinks, cover fixtures sold without a light source, or products for outdoor applications, nor does it cover SSL products for some indoor applications that intentionally produce tinted or colored light.

NEMA is a membership organization of manufacturers of products used in the generation, transmission, distribution, control, and end-use of electricity used in utility, medical imaging, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications.

Portable Pools
Outdoor pools come in various forms including in-ground, inflatable, and portable. A new standard from ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer ASTM International focuses on issues presented by portable pools. ASTM F 2666, Specification for Aboveground Portable Pools for Residential Use, aims to protect users, specifically children, from portable pools that may not be surrounded by a protective barrier.

The first in a projected series of pool standards, ASTM F 2666 covers performance requirements for the ability of pools to resist horizontal and vertical forces that could cause pool walls to collapse. The standard also covers valves, safety covers, water removal, filtration equipment, suction, and warning and product instructions. The document also addresses pool hazards including childhood drowning, sanitation, electrical safety and entrapment.

ASTM F 2666 works in tandem with ANSI/APSA-4, Standard for Aboveground/Onground Residential Swimming Pools, regarding ladders. The standard applies to all types of portable pools with a water depth of less than 36 inches (91 cm). It does not cover public pools, pools used in commercial amusement parks, water fountains, water displays, or fish ponds.
