CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton to Address October ANSI Caucus

New York, Sep 08, 2005

On Friday, October 7, 2005, the ANSI Caucus will feature Mr. Hal Stratton, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In August 2005, a CPSC delegation led by Stratton met with regulatory officials in the People’s Republic of China to discuss cooperative efforts to enforce consumer product safety standards and improve the safety of consumer products imported into the U.S. from China. China is the largest source of consumer products imported into the United States and the largest source for CPSC directed product recalls and port seizures. The meeting was an opportunity for officials from the CPSC and its counterpart in China, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to discuss the scope and details of collaboration agreed to in an April 2004 Memorandum of Understanding between the two bodies. Mr. Stratton will give Caucus attendees a briefing on this meeting.

The CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. The CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals - contributed significantly to the 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., will serve as the luncheon sponsor. The event will begin at 11:30 am with general networking, and lunch will be served at 12:00 noon.
