People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community. The
International Code Council (ICC), an organizational member and accredited standards developer of the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced the appointment of
Dave Walls as executive director of sustainability programs. He will be responsible for supporting efforts to secure adoptions of the International Green Construction Code, assisting with developing and enhancing green-related products and services, and leading outreach efforts to industry organizations. For the past five years Mr. Walls served as executive director of the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), where he oversaw the adoption and publication of the state's building codes. He also led a team of government and public stakeholders that created CALGreen, the nation's first statewide green building code. Prior to the CBSC Mr. Walls was an administrator with the Codes and Standards Division for the California Department of Housing and Community Development, supervising the overhaul of accessibility building standards for residential occupancies. He has developed and taught courses on the application of California's building codes, has been a building inspector at both the city and county level, and early in his career was a licensed general contractor. The ICC, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention, and energy efficiency, develops codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The International Codes serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.
