Reminder: 2007 World Standards Day Paper Competition Closes August 31

New York, Aug 17, 2007

The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee wishes to remind all interested parties that submissions to the annual paper competition are due by August 31, 2007. Papers must be original, unpublished works and address the theme “Standards and the Global Village.” Sponsored by the Standards Engineering Society (SES), the competition is open to all U.S.-based organizations and individuals.

From air quality to children’s toys and alternative energy sources to Internet security, standards and conformity assessment programs have become the tools that bolster social progress and stimulate worldwide economic development. The 2007 competition invites papers that illustrate ways in which standards developing organizations have encouraged and created global consensus for the economic and social benefit of the global village.

The winners of the competition will be recognized at a special ceremony during the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day exhibition, reception and dinner on October 18 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The event will bring together leaders from industry, academia, and government with consumers and science and technology experts for a celebration of the relationship between standards and the well-being of citizens in every corner of the world.

Papers will be reviewed by a panel of independent judges and approved by the 2007 World Standards Day Planning Committee. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best three papers submitted. The first place winner will receive $2,500 and a commemorative plaque. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, along with a certificate. In addition, the winning papers will be published in SES’s journal, Standards Engineering.

All paper contest submissions must be received with an official entry form by midnight August 31, 2007, by the SES Executive Director at the following address:
