ISO Standards Help to Fulfill Mission of World Environment Day

ISO Commemorates Tenth Anniversary of ISO 14001

New York, Jun 05, 2007

With the ISO 14000 family of environmental management system standards, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has worked for more than a decade to address important environmental concerns. Two of the latest additions to the ISO 14000 suite—ISO 14064 and 14065 for greenhouse gas reduction schemes and emissions trading—are well-suited counterparts to the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?

Commemorated annually on June 5, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates environmental awareness and political action in support of sustainable development. This year’s theme focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems, and the ensuing consequences worldwide.

Trapping the heat of the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are leading contributors to global warming. ISO 14064 and 14605 offer potential tools for governments and businesses to assess greenhouse gas emission reduction projects and manage GHG-related opportunities and risks [See related article: New Standard Offers Tool to Address Climate Change].

The ISO 14000 family addresses such subjects as environmental labeling, performance evaluation, life cycle analysis, and auditing. The suite establishes a holistic approach that can be implemented by all types of organizations, large or small. The best known document in the series, ISO 14001, celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2006. The standard has become the international benchmark for environmental management systems, and has been implemented in 138 countries.

“Whereas the environment was once dismissed as a fringe concern, the world at large is now coming to embrace the concept of sustainable development as being the only rational development,” commented ISO Secretary-General Alan Bryden in the May-June 2007 issue of ISO Management Systems marking the ten-year anniversary. “The ISO 14001 standard is one of the principal tools being used by organizations everywhere to meet their environmental challenges.”
