ANSI Members Partner to Standardize Latest Document Storage Technology

New York, Aug 29, 2002

Evolving technology is revolutionizing yet another aspect of our lives, and two ANSI members, The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies (NPES) and the Association for Information and Image Management, International (AIIM International), are at the forefront of change, developing a proposal for an international standard that will define the use of the Portable Document Format (PDF) for archiving and preserving documents.

Gone are the days of microfilm. Now important documents such as newspaper articles or legal papers can be stored electronically, complete with accompanying images and graphics. The joint NPES and AIIM project, called PDF/A, will allow documents to be archived electronically to ensure preservation of the contents over an extended period of time. In addition, it will guarantee that those documents will be able to be retrieved and reprinted in the future with a consistent and predictable result, avoiding the degradation that can occur over time with traditional document storage techniques.

The work produced by NPES and AIIM will fulfill the growing need for new document storage technology in a number of international government and industry segments, including legal systems, libraries, newspapers, regulated industries and others. The joint committee will identify issues to be addressed, as well as proposed solutions, and will develop a draft document what will then be presented to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). If accepted, the organizations believe that a Joint Working Group of TC 171/SC 2, TC 130 and TC 46* will be formed to process the document through development and approval as an International Standard.

Combined, AIIM and NPES have over 100 years of experience in the document storage and reproduction industries. AIIM International is a leader in Enterprise Content Management-technologies, tools and methods that are used to capture, manage, store preserve and deliver content across an enterprise in support of business processes. NPES represents more than 450 companies engaged in manufacturing and importing for sale or distribution machinery, equipment, systems, software and supplies used in every printing, publishing and converting process from desktop design and image generation and processing to multiple output options and targeted dissemination systems.

AIIM and NPES have invited anyone who is interested in the PDF/A project, and who is able to contribute technical expertise, to participate in their work. Interested persons can register to participate at http://www.aiim.org/pdf_a.
