ITA Standards Liaison to Address March ANSI Caucus

Washington, DC, Feb 13, 2004

The next meeting of the ANSI Caucus, to be held on Friday, March 5, will provide an update on the Standards Initiatives of Secretary of Commerce Don Evans. The guest speaker will be Heidi Hijikata, the first Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) Standards Liaison.

Ms. Hijikata works closely with the Office of the United States Trade Representative and other U.S. government agencies to address the priorities in U.S. trade agreements. She also works with NIST’s Standards Services Division to strengthen coordination on technical and policy issues affecting industry and its international competitiveness.

David Karmol, ANSI’s vice president for public policy and government affairs, urges members to take advantage of these monthly caucus meetings where oftentimes vital information, insight and helpful tips are provided through the expert knowledge and experience of the guest speaker. "Ms. Hijikata’s presentation will be of great interest and benefit to all of us in the standards community," he said.

Secretary Evans created the position of Standards Liaison last year as part of his Standards Initiative. The Standards Liaison serves as a focal point for standards within ITA and ensures that industry’s priorities on standards are promoted through the Commerce Department’s international policies and programs.

Ms. Hijikata will offer an update on the Secretary’s Standards Initiative that was announced in March of 2003.

The Institute thanks the American Petroleum Institute for co-sponsoring the March 2004 ANSI Caucus event.
