As the nation forges a path forward for economic growth and jobs for the future, efforts to build a more robust and qualified American workforce are taking hold at all levels of industry and government. And yet, as President Obama pointed out in his State of the Union address, today's job market shows an unexpected paradox: at a time when millions of Americans are looking for work, growing industries in science and technology are reporting difficulty in finding appropriately skilled professionals.

Building a Quality Workforce: A Key to Economic Development of the Nation will form the heart of discussions at the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) Joint Member Forum (JMF) meeting and luncheon, to be held March 20 as part of the Institute's annual spring member meetings.

This highly anticipated meeting will focus on the range of activities aimed at helping the nation meet President Obama's goal of doubling the credentials of the American workforce by 2020, enhance the credentialing of personnel, and support secondary and postsecondary career pathways in such industries as the auto, energy, and manufacturing sectors.

The forum will open with a panel, Building a Framework for a Quality Workforce, that will take a look at the range of initiatives underway within the public and private sectors to close the "skills gap" in the American labor market and build a quality workforce. The second panel, Building Educational Programs and Credentials within the Framework, will highlight recent efforts to move from a "credit-based" educational system to a "competency-based" framework that will help to bolster a skilled American workforce and creating postsecondary career pathways.

The event is open to all ANSI members. Click here to register.

In addition to the Joint Member Forum, all spring member meetings will take place at The Capital Conference Center, located at 3601 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA, 22201, (Washington Room - 6th floor). The schedule and event details follow:

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

In conjunction with Wednesday's meeting, ANSI will host the Database Design Verification Workshop - the first in a follow-up series from the May 2011 Standards Wars: Myth or Reality? workshop - to discuss enhancements to NSSN, the search engine for standards. This Workshop is geared to staff of standards developers who are familiar with or engaged in standards related data management and data sharing.
