Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Water Wells to Outdoor Power Equipment


In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Water Wells

The world’s oldest-known water wells are dated to 7500 BC. Today, over 15 million U.S. households rely on water wells for potable drinking water. Regular disinfecting of wells is required to protect consumers from bacteria, viruses, and other water-borne microorganisms harmful to humans.

To guide owners through well disinfecting procedures, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) recently published a revised American National Standard (ANS). ANSI/AWWA C654-2013, Disinfection of Wells, describes the procedures for shock chlorination and bacteriological testing for the disinfection of wells for potable water service. These procedures are applicable to any new or existing well for potable water service that may have been contaminated as a result of construction, servicing, or maintenance. ANSI/AWWA C654-2013 provides chlorination procedures for the gravel pack, well casing, pump, and appurtenant piping, presented in the sequence in which they generally would be implemented.

An ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, AWWA works to unite the entire water community to protect public health and welfare and provide safe, sufficient, and sustainable water for all. AWWA initiatives include advancing education, science, management, government policies, technology, and standards for the water industry.

Outdoor Power Equipment

In warmer months, 54 million Americans use 800 million gallons of gas per year to tend to their lawns with outdoor, gasoline-powered equipment like lawn mowers, garden tractors, and mulchers, according to estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Preventing fuel leakages is a common performance-related issue that gasoline-powered equipment manufacturers are continually combatting.

ANSI/OPEI B71.10-2013, Off-Road Ground-Supported Outdoor Power Equipment - Gasoline Fuel Systems - Performance Specifications and Test Procedures, was recently released to aid equipment manufacturers and protect people and the environment from potentially harmful fuel leaks. This revised ANS from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) describes performance-based specifications and test procedures applicable to the gasoline fuel systems for off-road, ground-supported, outdoor power equipment with spark ignition engines of less than one liter displacement.

An ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, OPEI is an international trade association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of consumer and commercial outdoor power equipment such as lawnmowers, garden tractors, edgers, chain saws, snow throwers, leaf blowers, and other related products. OPEI works to assist, advance, and foster the economic interest of its membership by providing accurate and timely worldwide information, promoting the effective and safe use of outdoor power equipment, and representing industry interests in legislative and regulatory affairs.
