Certified Automotive Parts Guarantee Quality in Post-Collision Repairs

New CAPA brochure available to technicians, insurers and consumers

When repairs are made after an auto collision, parts can come from almost any source: the manufacturer, the repair shop, even the junkyard. Some of these sources are willing to guarantee their parts, while others cannot be held accountable for functionality or lifespan. By certifying the quality of automotive parts used for collision repairs, the Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) provides consumers, auto body shops, part distributors and insurance adjusters with an objective method for evaluating the quality of certified parts and their functional equivalency to similar parts manufactured by automotive companies.

A member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), CAPA develops quality standards that apply to various types of parts made from different materials. There are three CAPA specifications that set quality standards for metal (CAPA 101), plastic (CAPA 201) and lighting (CAPA 301), providing detailed testing and inspection procedures to ensure the quality of the parts covered by that specification. In many cases, CAPA test procedures refer to the nationally recognized tests of ANSI members ASTM International and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

In order for a part to be certified by CAPA, a participating manufacturer receives a detailed review and inspection of its factory and manufacturing process. Participants retain sole responsibility for their products, as well as the responsibility of ensuring that the products to which they affix the CAPA Quality Seal actually conform to the applicable standards.

Only competitive auto body parts that meet or exceed CAPA Quality Standards for fit, materials, and corrosion resistance are allowed to display the CAPA Quality Seal and are listed in a directory, which is widely available to the crash parts industry. Once the seal is affixed to a surface, it will self-destruct when removed. This ensures that a seal cannot be transferred from a certified part to a non-certified part.

CAPA has introduced a new brochure that provides in-depth information on what the CAPA Seal means to collision repairers, insurers and consumers. It provides information and statistics on the aftermarket parts industry, specific requirements of the CAPA program, and an overview of the importance of high quality competitive alternatives to car company service parts. Though CAPA and the aftermarket parts industry is not currently involved in a product certification program administered by the American National Standards Institute, ANSI does provide accreditation services for a large number of other product certification activities. Administered in accordance with ISO/IEC Guide 65, these programs help to ensure market confidence in industries ranging from food and water to gas appliances and personal protective and safety equipment.
