U.S. Communicates Endorsement of its Candidate for IEC Vice President to IEC National Committees

New York, May 05, 2003

In a letter issued earlier today to the presidents of the more than sixty National Committees of the IEC, the leadership of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the U.S. National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (USNC/IEC) endorsed Mr. Frank K. Kitzantides for election to the office of IEC vice president and chairman of the Standardization Management Board.

Dr. Mark W. Hurwitz, ANSI president and CEO, and Mr. Steven A. Seeker, president of the U.S. National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), signed the letter which states:

“The U.S. National Committee believes that Mr. Kitzantides is uniquely qualified to provide leadership to the SMB and support to the IEC as it implements its strategic plan for the future. He has a distinguished history in the international standardization and conformity assessment arenas with significant experience and proven capabilities working both domestically and in the international community.”

Dr. Hurwitz and Mr. Seeker continued by citing Mr. Kitzantides' "practical, hands-on experience with IEC procedures and operations" and his active involvement in the development of technical management issues important to IEC such as Sector Board membership, alternative voting proposals and the IEC Global Relevance Policy.

Mr. Kitzantides, who is vice-president of engineering at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), currently serves as a Vice President of the USNC and chairs its Technical Management Committee. His contributions to the USNC and the IEC include more than ten years as the U.S. chief delegate to the SMB and its predecessor, the IEC Committee of Action.

He joined the USNC in 1979, and has been the U.S. representative on the IEC Policy Committee on Conformity Assessment since 1991. Most recently he has been serving as chairman of the IECEE, a worldwide program for mutual recognition of test results among national certification bodies; this term will end at the close of 2003.

Mr. Kitzantides is also a member of the American National Standards Institute Board of Directors and served as chairman of ANSI's Electronics Standards Board from 1987 to 1991.

The election will take place at the IEC Council meeting on October 17, 2003 in Montreal, Canada.
