ANSI Electric Vehicles Work to Be Featured at First-Ever International eMobility Standards Symposium

The German Institute for Standardization (DIN), in collaboration with SAE International and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), has organized an International eMobility Standards Symposium, which is scheduled to be held in Anaheim, California, on Monday, February 18, 2013. The symposium, held in conjunction with SAE's 2013 Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technologies Symposium, will examine current and emerging electric vehicle (EV) standards and how they are driving innovation in the field of eMobility and charging infrastructure. Other significant topics expected to be covered include eMobility standards implementation and gaps, as well as lessons learned that will help grow the market for EVs.

Jim McCabe, senior director for standards facilitation for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), will deliver a keynote speech at the event that will discuss the important work done in this area by the Institute's Electric Vehicles Standards Panel (EVSP), which released its Standardization Roadmap for Electric Vehicles - Version 1.0 in April 2012. Mr. McCabe will also take part in a panel discussion that includes ANSI EVSP co-chair James Matthews, technical standards and standards policy director at Corning Incorporated, in his capacity as chair of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)'s Standardization Management Board (SMB). The symposium will open with a keynote address by David Dossett, European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) president, on the work carried out by his organization's eMobility co-ordination group. Technical experts from BMW Group, IBM, and ABB, among others, will also share information on new developments in the field.

The event continues a dialogue on opportunities to strengthen international cooperation on eMobility standardization which was the subject of a November 2012 Transatlantic eMobility Standardization Roundtable convened by ANSI, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), and CENELEC [see related news item], as well as a topic discussed at the Second Annual German-U.S. Standardization Roundtable organized by ANSI and DIN. Participation in the Anaheim symposium is encouraged from battery manufacturers, infrastructure and component suppliers, product-design engineers for vehicles, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), representatives of academia, government agencies, electrical utilities, and other interested stakeholders. The symposium will take place at the Hilton Anaheim (777 West Convention Way) beginning at 9 a.m. on February 18.
