ANSI Hosts ISO President Alan Morrison

New York, May 08, 2009

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was pleased to host Alan Morrison, Ph.D., president of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), during his recent visit to the United States on May 6–7, 2009.

Dr. Morrison met with a number of ANSI staff and representatives during his two-day visit. On Wednesday, May 6, he addressed ANSI governance leaders and senior staff in a meeting held at the Institute’s headquarters in Washington, DC. In a presentation entitled “ISO These Days,” Dr. Morrison outlined ISO activities and membership, including the organization’s longstanding relationship with ANSI. He also discussed ISO’s work on emerging issues such as water, energy management, and biotechnology.

On Thursday, May 7, Dr. Morrison delivered the luncheon address at a meeting of the ANSI Board of Directors in Arlington, VA. He discussed some of the issues that the international community faces today, including the economic downturn and concerns about the environment.

“These challenges are global in scale, and require global solutions,” said Dr. Morrison. “ISO International Standards, which distill state-of-the-art experience and knowledge from experts around the world, can serve as powerful solutions.”

Building upon the message delivered by ISO Secretary-General Rob Steele during his visit to ANSI in March [see related news item], Dr. Morrison underscored ISO’s effort to update its Strategic Plan for 2011–2015 to address emerging international priorities.

“ISO’s proven track record, and particularly its achievements under the current Strategic Plan, give it a solid foundation to address global challenges,” explained Dr. Morrison. “However, in order to continue its successful development, ISO needs to innovate and to identify the best way to add value to the evolving world framework.”

As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI is coordinating an effort to compile U.S. stakeholder input on the ISO Strategic Plan 2011–2015. An online survey is open for response until June 5, 2009. And on June 25–26, ANSI will convene a workshop in Washington, DC, to review the survey results and formulate the U.S. contribution to the Plan. [see related news item]

“I speak for everyone at ANSI in saying that we’ve truly enjoyed hosting Dr. Morrison and furthering the partnership that ANSI and ISO share,” said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. “Our discussions were highly productive and informative, and I look forward to future opportunities to confer and collaborate with Dr. Morrison and all ISO staff.”

Alan Morrison was elected to serve a two-year term as ISO president, beginning January 1, 2009. To read Dr. Morrison’s biography, please visit the ISO site.
