Comments Sought on Proposal for ISO/IEC Standard on International Terminology for Renewable and Efficient Energy

ANSI and USNC invite interested U.S. stakeholders to submit comments by February 13

New York, Jan 15, 2009

The Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) has submitted a new work item proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for a standard on common international terminology for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. As the U.S. member bodies to ISO and the IEC, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the U.S. National Committee of the IEC (USNC) invite all interested stakeholders to submit comments by February 13, 2009.

As stated in the proposal’s scope, AFNOR’s project seeks to specify the terms and definitions used in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It will provide support for the metrics, calculation and assessment methods, methodologies, and best practices needed by policy makers, standardization technical committees working on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, and other stakeholders.

Common international terms and definitions in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources will provide a shared language for stakeholders, including suppliers, clients, regulators, and others. AFNOR states that the common terminology will facilitate actions at three levels:

  • elaboration of regional and national regulations;
  • standard writing, coordination between the different technical committees, and standards understanding and application by users; and
  • clarification of relations between providers and clients (in procurement, contracts, and services).

If approved, this International Standard will be developed under an ISO/IEC Joint Project Committee. All comments on the proposal should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy (ISO) (scornish@ansi.org) and Rafael Lourenco, deputy general-secretary of the USNC (rlourenco@ansi.org) by the February deadline.

The ANSI Virtual Technical Advisory Group (VTAG) for the ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) Strategic Advisory Group on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources will work cooperatively with the USNC/IEC Technical Management Committee (TMC) Electronic Technical Advisory Group (ETAG) for the IEC Standardization Management Board (SMB) Strategic Group #1 on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources to consider all comments received. Together the groups will develop a recommended ANSI/USNC position and comments on this proposal. The position and comments will then be sent to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) and the USNC/IEC TMC for approval prior to being submitted to ISO and IEC.
