Pacific Area Standards Congress to Convene in Vietnam

ANSI Issues Call for Delegates

New York, Jan 27, 2003

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced today that the 26th annual meeting of the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) will be held April 23-25 in Hanoi, Vietnam. A call for delegates accompanied the announcement.

The Institute’s Regional Standing Committee of the Asia-Pacific (RSC-AP) coordinates ANSI’s participation in PASC, which is a forum to strengthen international standardization programs for nations in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Les Eastwood, chairman of the RSC-AP, will coordinate ANSI’s participation in PASC XXVI, along with ANSI chairman, Dr. George Arnold; ANSI president and CEO, Dr. Mark W. Hurwitz, and chairman of the ANSI International Policy Committee, Mr. Robert Noth. ANSI is the U.S. member to PASC.

The preliminary meeting agenda indicates that several themes from the 2002 meeting will carry-over for further discussion in Vietnam. Key among these are topics relating to increased consumer and developing country participation in standardization. In response to this, specific items focus on information for developing countries in establishing a standards and conformance infrastructure; participation in ISO and IEC; and raising awareness of standardization with industry, government regulators and consumers. A series of sessions on electrotechnical topics will include a review of electrical standards. Formalized criteria and processes for working with major international standards developers will also be discussed.

The PASC meeting will be preceded by the workshop, APEC/PASC Training Programme – Participation in International Standardization Processes, which will be held from April 21-22. The workshop will concentrate on the challenges and responses of international standardization and will feature discussions and case studies on topics ranging from the importance of using international standards in regulation to a panel discussion on the use of Information Technology (IT) tools for standards development. Outstanding matters arising from this workshop will be the subject of further discussion at the PASC meeting.

The Directorate for Standards and Quality of Vietnam will host both the PASC meeting and the APEC/PASC Workshop.

Members of the RSC and the International Policy Committee who are interested in more information or who wish to register as a member of ANSI delegation to the PASC meeting and/or the workshop are asked to contact Mary Bowers, ANSI program manager, international policy (e-mail: mbowers@ansi.org). The deadline date is February 26, 2003. Details on logistics and hotel arrangements will be sent to delegates confirming their participation.
