Standards Help Launch Fall for Everyone, from Theme Park Aficionados to Seasonal TV Binge Watchers

Autumn 2017 officially begins on September 22, bringing a fresh season filled with new activities for children and adults alike. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) proudly supports its members and standards developers whose work makes favorite fall activities possible, whether you're keeping warm by the fireplace while watching a movie or venturing to an amusement park festival.

Coffee to Keep You Warm and Awake

As coffee drinkers switch from iced brews to their favorite hot cup of joe, they may not be aware of the standards that support their caffeine intake.

An American National Standard (ANS) from ANSI member and audited designator ASTM International, ASTM F 2988-12,Standard Specification for Commercial Coffee Maker, Electric, Automatic, covers commercial single cup or batch coffee brewers which are used for brewing coffee in commercial and institutional facilities and does not include residential units. This specification is limited to standard coffee brewers and does not include espresso or specialty coffee drink machines.

ASTM International seeks to develop voluntary consensus standards to improve products quality enhance, safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.

Fog Machines Enhance Theme Park Horrors

Adventurous amusement park goers may seek out Halloween-themed horror shows with a full range of spooky effects. From haunted houses to zombies in the dark, activities meant to induce a terror-filled experience seem to get more over the top each year. One familiar and eerie sight at theme parks is fog effects that emulate a spooky scene.

The ANS ANSI E1.23-2010 (R2015), Entertainment Technology - Design and Execution of Theatrical Fog Effects, offers guidance on planning and carrying out fog effects so that recognized exposure levels are not exceeded, fire and egress hazards are not created, false alarms don't summon the fire brigade, and fog effects are executed as they are designed, performance after performance.

The standard was developed by the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA), an ANSI-accredited standards developing organization (SDO).

ESTA is a non-profit trade association based in North America with members around the world. ESTA's members are responsible for creating some of the most important programs in industry including the Technical Standards Program, Entertainment Technician Certification Program and Rental Guard.

Binge Watch Fall TV or Movies by the Fire

There are plenty of people who opt to stay in and catch up on their favorite programs by the fireplace. An ANS developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) NFPA 211, Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances, reduces fire hazards by ensuring the safe removal of flue gases, the proper installation of solid-fuel-burning appliances, and the correct construction and installation of chimneys, fireplaces, and venting systems.

NFPA, an ANSI member and audited designator, is committed to producing and promoting consensus codes and standards, research, and training and education, and works to prevent fires as well as to lessen the impact of fires when they do occur, which includes developing procedures that will keep firefighters safe and healthy.

For those in the binge watching mood—whether it's horror movies or fall football games—television screens create the experience. CSA C382-11, Energy performance of television and displays, specifies the test method for measuring the energy performance and defines the performance requirements of displays with a viewable screen size greater than or equal to 75 cm (30 in) diagonal and of televisions of all sizes.

CSA C382-11 was developed by CSA Group, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer. The mission of CSA Group is to represent the interests of its members in creating a better, safer, more sustainable world – primarily through standards development, technical research, and training in relevant fields.
