ISO Environmental Management Brochure Ready for World Summit on Sustainable Development

New York, Aug 27, 2002

In response to the increasing call for organizations to demonstrate sound management on economic, social, and environmental issues, the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) recently published a newly revised version of its free brochure on the ISO14000 family of environmental management standards.

Experts participating ISO Technical Committee 207 - Environmental management, updated the 1998 version of the brochure, entitled Environmental Management - The ISO 14000 Family of International Standards 2002, especially for distribution at the World Summit on Sustainable Development to begin next week in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Johannesburg 2002: The World Summit on Sustainable Development (also known as Rio + 10), will be a summit gathering of world governments, concerned citizens, United Nations agencies, multilateral financial institutions and other major actors to assess global change since the historic United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), of 1992. In Johannesburg, from September 2-11, 2002, the world will take a critical look back at UNCED, and aim to arrive at a comprehensive, frank and useful review of the past ten years.

The authors of the brochure noted, "The whole ISO 14000 family provides management tools for organizations to control their environmental aspects and to improve their environmental performance. Together, these tools can provide significant tangible economic benefits, including reduced raw material/resource use, reduced energy consumption, improved process efficiency, reduced waste generation and disposal costs, and utilization of recoverable resources." Associated with each of these economic benefits are distinct environmental benefits too, which demonstrates the contribution that the ISO 14000 family makes to the environmental and economic components of sustainable development and the triple bottom line.

The ISO 14000 family is composed of standards relating to environmental management systems; these standards tools to help organizations create environmental policies, objectives, targets, and to classify them at both the organizational level and in relation to products and services. The newly revised brochure provides a comprehensive overview of the published standards, technical reports and guides, as well as present projects and other ISO 14000-related publications, developed by TC 207 since the committee's establishment in 1993.
