ANSI Expresses Sympathy for Victims of Hurricane Katrina

ANSI encourages active support of relief efforts

New York, Aug 31, 2005

Along with the hearts and minds of the nation, the members and staff of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) are following with sorrow the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region of the United States. We express our concern for all those who have been impacted by this monumental natural disaster and keep the victims in our thoughts during this terrible time.

We hope that our fellow citizens will find some comfort in the expressions of compassion received from friends around country and around the world.

"We are following with awe and sorrow the consequences of the Katrina hurricane which is currently hitting the South East USA. This major catastrophe. . . points out once more the solidarity that is needed to address the natural disasters and other threats that our 'global village' faces," wrote Alan Bryden, secretary general of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

"Our thoughts are with all those who are suffering over there and I convey to you, as our U.S. member, the sympathy and kind thoughts of the teams at ISO."

We are also committed to working together in the standardization community as we strive to develop solutions that will improve building codes, emergency preparedness, and disaster recovery.

For the hurricane victims in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, high priority needs include housing, transportation and emergency supplies of non-perishable items.

ANSI encourages its member organizations that have the resources to help to log-on to the Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Information Network - Critical Infrastructure Program (HSIN-CI)website:

  • DHS National Emergency Resource Registry
The NERR is a national registery that assists in emergency coordination efforts by helping to identify the resources that are needed and the resources that may be available both from the HSIN-CI Membership and the public.

Another effective way to assist relief efforts is through the donation of cash contributions. For those individuals who wish to contribute, please find listed below a few of the recovery organizations that have already been established to provide information and handle donations for victims throughout the region.

The above list of resources is provided for information only. No endorsement is implied by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or any of its members.
