September SES Webinar to Focus on the Convergence of Standards Development and Open Source Projects
ANSI member and accredited standards developer SES - The Society for Standards Professionals will hold a webinar focused on the relationship between open source projects and standards development from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 24, 2014.
The webinar, Convergence of Open Source Projects and Standards Development, will be led by Andrew Updegrove, partner and co-founder of Gesmer Updegrove LLP, a technology-focused law firm. During the webinar, Mr. Updegrove will discuss the interoperable peer communications framework associated with the AllSeen Alliance, along with other current examples of open source projects, with an eye toward the relationship between these projects and traditional standards development.
The webinar is offered free of charge to all current SES members and ANSI full member technical contacts; participation costs $50 for non-members. NFPA Issues Report on Cooking Fire Prevention Technology Effectiveness
ANSI member and audited designator the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released a new report intended to support the development of potential standard test protocols for emerging technologies focused on preventing cooking-related fires. This document was produced by NFPA in conjunction with Hughes Associates Inc., a firm specializing in fire protection research and consulting.
The report, Development of Standardized Cooking Fires for Evaluation of Prevention Technologies, drew on research carried out by NFPA and Hughes Associates beginning in 2010, and included results from two live fire test series on electric cooking ranges. The development of standards for cooking fire prevention technologies is expected to help reduce the severity of cooking fires, which killed more than 400 people and did $850 million in damage each year between 2007 and 2011.

ACC and USGBC Partner on Use of Sustainable Products in LEED Buildings
ANSI members and accredited standards developers the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently announced a new initiative intended to bolster the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable materials in structures associated with the USGBC's LEED green building program. Under the partnership, the two organizations will work to bolster the LEED program by leveraging the specialized knowledge held by ACC and its members to improve the program's sustainability, safety, and life-cycle related guidelines.

PCI Security Standards Council Releases Guidance on Third-Party Security Assurance
ANSI member the PCI Security Standards Council recently published a new document providing guidance to businesses and other organizations on approaches to securing card data. The document, the Third-Party Security Assurance Information Supplement, was created by a PCI Special Interest Group (SIG) that included representatives of banks, merchant organizations, and third-party service providers, among others.
The document provides guidance on managing the shared responsibility to maintain the confidentiality and security of customer card data and covers approaches for implementing effective due diligence and risk assessment activities when working with a third-party service provider. In addition, it offers recommendations for establishing a communications plan and maintaining and managing work relationships with third-party organizations, among other guidance.
