CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton to Address October ANSI Caucus

Washington, DC, Sep 13, 2004

On Friday, October 1, 2004, the ANSI Caucus will feature Mr. Hal Stratton, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Confirmed by the Senate in 2002, Chairman Stratton has led a more collaborative, less confrontational CPSC, believing that he can accomplish more for consumers working with industry and professional groups in partnership. Mr. Stratton was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation. He holds degrees in geology and law from the University of Oklahoma.

The CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. The CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals - contributed significantly to the 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

The caucus meeting will provide an opportunity for attendees to gain an appreciation of the operations and challenges faced by the CPSC on a daily basis.

"We are looking forward to our first fall ANSI Caucus, with Chairman Stratton as our speaker," said David Karmol, ANSI vice president of public policy and government affairs. "Chairman Stratton has strongly encouraged the Commission staff to work collaboratively with standards developers, and his staff has regularly consulted with ANSI staff on both domestic and international standards issues, across a broad range of subjects."

The event will begin at 11:30 am with general networking, and lunch will be served at 12:00 noon. The University Club is located at 1135 16th Street, between L and M streets. To RSVP, please contact Jessica Karp ( by Thursday, September 23, 2004.

ANSI Caucus luncheons are held on the first Friday of each month and are free to ANSI members. The next caucus on Friday, November 5, 2004, will welcome Jacqueline Zeiher, of the Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget, Information Policy and Technology.
