Upcoming Workshop To Address Nanomedicine and Terminology

New York, Dec 30, 2009

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) would like to inform all constituents of an upcoming workshop on nanomedicine and terminology. The event will be held on January 12 2010, in Philadelphia.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the Chemical Heritage Foundation and the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 229, Nanotechnologies, is intended to support terminology activities within the U.S. TAG. Attendees will examine nanomedicine initiatives in the U.S. and how these activities can help the TAG to create a framework for the development of nanomedicine terminology.

The draft agenda is currently slated to include discussions on:

  • ANSI and the voluntary consensus standards process
  • ISO TC 229 terminology efforts currently underway
  • Nanomedicine, specifically
    • Medical sub-fields most affected by nanotechnology
    • U.S. activities in bioinformatics
    • Medical terminology most affected by nanotechnology

The workshop will conclude with a discussion of next steps and expected outcomes. Lunch will be served to all attendees.

The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Those interested in attending should contact Heather Benko, ANSI senior manager of nanotechnology standardization activities (, 212.642.4912).
