ANSI Seeks Organizations to Participate in Development of New ISO Technical Committee on Governance of Organizations

4/21/2017

Technical Committee to also provide ongoing support for ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management Systems

A Closer Look at ISO 37001

ISO 37001 addresses the following in relation to the organization's activities:

  • Bribery in the public, private, and non-profit sectors;

  • Bribery by the organization;

  • Bribery by the organization's personnel acting on the organization's behalf or for its benefit;

  • Bribery by the organization's business associates acting on the organization's behalf or for its benefit;

  • Bribery of the organization;

  • Bribery of the organization's personnel in relation to the organization's activities;

  • Bribery of the organization's business associates in relation to the organization's activities;

  • Direct and indirect bribery (e.g., a bribe offered or accepted through or by a third party).

A newly proposed International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee, (TC) 309, Governance of organizations, focuses on the increasingly important field of governance relating to aspects of direction, control, and accountability of organizations. Governance is a crucial factor in enabling organizations to achieve goals in a professional, ethical, and legal manner. One merely needs to read news headlines to understand the potential impact an insufficient commitment to governance can have on organizations, employees, business partners, customers, and shareholders. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages organizations to actively engage in this important endeavor by participating as a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG).

TC 309 will focus on topics related to anti-bribery, conflicts of interest, due diligence, whistleblowing, compliance, remuneration structures, external reporting and more. Additionally TC 309 will be responsible for providing ongoing guidance, support and communications for the recently published standard ISO 37001, Anti-Bribery Management Systems, to promote further awareness, adoption, and revisions, as needed.

TAG participants will enable organizations to collaborate,contribute to and shape the proposed Governance of Organizations standard, as well as build upon the success and momentum generated from the recent publication of ISO 37001 in October 2016.

ISO 37001 serves as an important tool to help organizations of all sizes, structures, geographies, and jurisdictions to assess, prevent, detect, and mitigate bribery risk within their own operations, as well as among the respective members of their value chains [see ANSI's related coverage]. ISO Project Committee (PC) 278, Anti-Bribery Management Systems, developed ISO 37001 through the collaborative work of 61 countries, including the United States, and with Secretariat leadership from BSI (UK).

Recently, ANSI member Microsoft Corporation announced on the Microsoft on the Issues Blog and in Ethisphere Magazine that it has committed to the ISO Anti-Bribery Management System Standard, after actively partnering with subject matter experts in the U.S. and other countries to help develop and draft ISO 37001. To that end, both ANSI and Microsoft call on subject matter experts to participate on a U.S. TAG for TC 309.
