Standards Community to Host Hill Event on Smart Health

6/28/2017

Presented by Co-Chairs and Administrating Organization of U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2017

In conjunction with the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2017, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will co-host an event on July 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., focused on "Smart Health: Using intelligent systems to improve the quality and delivery of health care in a more integrated, focused approach."

The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD), an annual event co-chaired by ANSI and NIST, serves to recognize the critical role of various stakeholders across the standards community, including business leaders, industry, academia, and government. The 2017 WSD theme, "Smart Health," was chosen to highlight the realities of the modern age of healthcare and prepare for the needs for the future using intelligent healthcare systems. Such innovative systems provide a distributed environment that requires a purposeful precision and a level of reliability and availability to maintain their effectiveness. And to that end, standards play a large part in supporting these systems to improve the quality and delivery of healthcare for a more integrated, focused approach.

The event will take place at U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (room HVC-201AB) and will feature speakers who will share insights on their roles in the standards process. Representatives from many standards developing organizations (SDOs) will also present information on their work via tabletop displays.

S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO, will kick-off the event. The speaker lineup is also set to include:

  • Kevin Fu, CEO, Virta Laboratories; Associate Professor, University of Michigan, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)

  • Janet Marchibroda, Executive Director, CEO Council on Health and Innovation, Bipartisan Policy Center

  • Suzanne Schwartz, MD, Associate Director, Science and Strategic Partnerships, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Networking opportunities and a brown bag lunch will also be available for attendees. The host organizations request all interested stakeholders to RSVP by July 3 to Kelly Hunget, [email protected].

The official WSD ceremony will be held at the Mandarin Hotel in Washington, D.C., on October 19, 2017. This year, AAMI will serve as the event's administrating organization. To read more about World Standards Day 2017, please click on the recent ANSI news article here.
