A coalition of 18 industry associations that includes members of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has sent a letter to cabinet members encouraging the support of U.S. manufacturing and calling on officials in Congress and President Trump's Administration to halt international efforts that threaten American jobs and competitiveness.
Recently launched as Engaging America's Global Leadership (EAGL), the coalition represents a diverse range of industries - including agriculture, plastics, footwear, medical devices, and consumer products -that fuel the U.S. economy. Furthermore, it serves to foster effective U.S. leadership and address the growing number of activities at global institutions, including the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, that may impact U.S. manufacturing and jobs. The letter addresses concern over the growing wave of activities out of the UN and other multilateral venues that may jeopardize the U.S. economy.
With the support of ANSI members the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the American Chemistry Council, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the National Pork Producers Council, and the Plastics Industry Association, the coalition's letter emphasizes that its member organizations support strong U.S. leadership in global institutions and initiatives that support a vibrant economy.
It also calls out specific activities, such as price controls that are being manipulated to pressure national governments to adopt specific policies and recommendations that harm manufacturers in the U.S., and the high-paying jobs within the sector. The letter also notes that many of the policy proposals and recommendations are formulated in ways that "exclude or marginalize U.S. government and private-sector representatives," which calls into question the impartiality and motivations of such initiatives.
To that end, EAGL notes that it is imperative that U.S. interests be vigorously defended, and explains that the coalition pledges to work with the administration and Congress that improve the ability of the U.S. government to promote American economic interests.
