Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Drinking Fountains to Emergency Preparedness for Organizations

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Drinking Fountains
Developed as early as the 6th century B.C. in ancient Greece, drinking fountains began as simple, gravity-assisted water sources that marked the terminating point of aqueducts carrying water from mountains, springs, and rivers into cities. Since then, drinking fountains have continually evolved, resulting in a modern water fountain that can provide sanitary, filtered, refrigerated, or heated water instantly at the push of a button.

To assure that drinking fountains with self-contained refrigeration units are properly installed, energy efficient, and dispensing safe drinking water, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently released American National Standard ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 18-2008, Methods of Testing for Rating Drinking-Water Coolers with Self-Contained Mechanical Refrigeration. An update to ASHRAE Standard 18-2006, this recent edition offers a method of testing for the cooling capacity and energy consumption of self-contained, mechanically refrigerated drinking water coolers. It is available on the ANSI eStandardsStore along with many other ASHRAE standards.

Emergency Preparedness for Organizations
Natural disasters, environmental accidents, technology mishaps, and man-made crises are disruptive incidents that impact the public and private sectors alike. The ASIS International American National Standard ASIS SPC.1-2009, Organizational Resilience: Security, Preparedness, and Continuity Management Systems - Requirements with Guidance for Use, offers a comprehensive management systems approach for security, preparedness, response, mitigation, operational continuity, and recovery for disruptive incidents resulting in an emergency, crisis, or disaster. This standard has been identified for prospective adoption in the Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program (PS-Prep) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
