Department of Commerce Requests Comments On Standards Issues Facing Trade

New York, Sep 29, 2003

The Department of Commerce's (DoC) National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued a Federal Register Notice requesting industry comments on pressing standards issues and priority foreign markets. As part of Commerce Secretary Don Evans’s Initiative to Enhance Commerce Department Standards Activities, the department is currently conducting a series of industry roundtables, seeking comment on barriers in export markets caused by foreign governments' policies on standards and technical regulatory requirements. The department is supplementing these roundtables with a general solicitation of comments from industry representatives. The next roundtable is scheduled for October 23.

Members of the American National Standards Institute with an interest in this issue are encouraged to submit their comments (electronic is recommended). The Institute asks that ANSI members also send a copy of their comments to ANSI's vice president of public policy, David Karmol ( so that ANSI can more effectively represent the Institute’s views in its ongoing partnership with DoC officials. Written comments on standards issues and foreign markets must be submitted to NIST no later than November 1, 2003.

For moreinformation on submitting input, contact Dr. Belinda Collins (301-975-4500), or Ms. Christine DeVaux (301-975-4679), NIST Technology Services. For information on the open roundtable, contact Ms. Lisa Handy, International Trade Administration (202-482-2788).
