Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Infrared Heaters to Animal Feed

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Infrared Heaters
The use of infrared heaters covers a spectrum of applications, from plastic welding and glass processing, to cooking and browning food, to providing warmth to reptiles and tropical birds in captivity. They are used when high temperatures are required, fast responses or temperature gradients are needed, or products need to be heated in a targeted way.

To aid in preventing injury during normal operation of infrared heaters, CSA America, Inc. recently released ANSI Z83.20-2008/CSA 2.34-2008, Gas-Fired Low-Intensity Infrared Heaters, a new standard that provides guidelines for the safe operation, substantial and durable construction, and acceptable performance of infrared heaters.

The new standard applies to newly constructed gas-fired low-intensity infrared heaters and infrared radiant tube heaters with inputs up to and including 400,000 btu/hr (117.23 kw) per burner. Heaters covered by this standard are intended for use with natural gas, manufactured gas, mixed gas, propane gases, and propane gas-air mixtures. ANSI Z83.20-2008/CSA 2.34-2008 includes indoor and outdoor heaters mounted overhead, on a wall, or free-standing and portable floor models.

CSA America, Inc., an ANSI-accredited standards developer and organizational member, is a standards writing body for appliances and accessories fuelled by natural, liquefied petroleum (propane) and hydrogen gases.

Animal Feed
Animal feed contains a variety of ingredients including corn, soybeans, oats, alfalfa, millet, and clover. In addition, feed often includes vitamins or other medical treatments, such as antibiotics, that aid in keeping food chain supplies safe for healthy animals and people. A recently published standard from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), an ANSI-accredited standards developer and organizational member, will assist farmers and manufacturers in combining these ingredients accurately.

ANSI/ASAE S319.4 FEB 2008, Method of Determining and Expressing Fineness of Feed Materials by Sieving, provides guidelines for obtaining a desirable size of animal feed that is palatable and easily digestible for the animals that consume it. The new standard defines a test procedure to determine the fineness of feed ingredients and a method of expressing the particle size of the material. ANSI/ASAE S319.4 FEB 2008 should be used to determine the fineness of feed ingredients where the reduction process yields particles which are primarily spherical or cubical. Materials such as steamed and rolled grains, chopped hay or fibrous biomass, which are flaked or consist of elongated particles, are not substantial enough to define.
