Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Energy Simulation for Buildings to Single-Use Flame Resistant Clothing


In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Energy Simulation and Analysis for New Construction and Building Renovations
As building owners, architects, and others involved in new construction and building renovations become increasingly invested in energy efficiency, energy simulation and analysis have become an important way to include these factors into the design process. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 209-2018, Energy Simulation Aided Design for Buildings except Low Rise Residential Buildings, defines minimum requirements for providing energy design assistance using building energy simulation and analysis. With this standard, construction and design professionals process are guided to use building energy modeling early in the design process, allowing them to make design decisions that lead to higher performing buildings. It is applicable to new buildings as well as major renovations and additions. This American National Standard (ANS) was developed by ASHRAE, an ANSI member and audited designator.

ASHRAE is an international membership organization representing building design and industrial processes professionals, with a focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability. The organization offers research, standards writing, publishing, certification, and continuing education.

Single-Use Outer Layer Flame Resistant Clothing
Workers who may be exposed to flame hazards as well as workplace contaminants, such as grease, oil, or welding splatter, often wear two layers of flame-resistant clothing, with the top layer being single-use. Both layers offer protection from potential fire or electrical arcs, while the disposable outer layer also protects the inner layer of clothing from chemicals or materials that may damage them or make them less fire resistant in subsequent uses. These single-use outer layers are commonly used in utility work, hazmat remediation, laboratory operations, and petrochemical processing facilities.

ANSI/ISEA 203-2018, American National Standard for Secondary Single-Use Flame Resistant Protective Clothing for Use Over Primary Flame Resistant Protective Clothing, offers testing and performance requirements for these outer layers, so that they will offer flame resistance while not negatively impacting the thermal performance of the primary flame resistant clothing worn underneath. This (ANS) was developed by the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.

ISEA represents companies in the personal protective equipment and technologies industries, providing solutions for equipment and systems that enable people to work in hazardous environments. The organization provides a forum for information sharing and industry action, and works with government agencies and Congress to consult with policy makers whose decisions affect the industry.
