ANSI Mourns the Loss of Maureen Breitenberg

Friends, members, staff, and colleagues of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) mourn the loss of Maureen Breitenberg, a valued member of the standards and conformity assessment community. Ms. Breitenberg passed away on November 21, 2010.

Ms. Breitenberg served as senior economist in the Standards Services Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where she was responsible for providing technical advice and assistance on standards, conformity assessment, and other trade-related matters to other government agencies, foreign government bodies, and private industry.

Ms. Breitenberg authored a number reports on subjects related to standardization and conformity assessment. Her publications include two widely distributed reports on the ISO 9000 standards series; primers on U.S. standardization, certification, conformity assessment, and laboratory accreditation activities; and directories of European regional and international standards-related organizations, U.S. private and public sector certification programs, and federal government laboratory accreditation/designation programs. She was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for her outstanding work.

Ms. Breitenberg was a valued member of the ANSI Community and served on a number of its committees, including the ANSI Executive Standards Council, the ANSI Accreditation Committee, the Conformity Assessment Policy Committee and International Conformity Assessment Committee, and the Institute's Regional Standing Committees for the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe/Middle East/Africa regions.

"Maureen was a well known and respected member of the standards community and a longtime friend of ANSI. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and colleagues at NIST," said ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia. "She will be dearly missed."

In 2003, ANSI awarded Ms. Breitenberg a Meritorious Service Award, in recognition of her significant contributions to voluntary standardization.
