Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from In-flight Air Quality to Laser Beam Welding

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

In-flight Air Quality
Maintaining indoor air quality is essential for general health and well-being. Many voluntary consensus standards currently help consumers, contractors, and building managers to achieve optimal air quality in residential and commercial buildings. But achieving optimal air quality at 30,000 feet while on-board an airplane is an even greater task. A new American National Standard from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) provides guidelines to ensure the quality of airplane cabin air while in flight.

ASHRAE Standard 161-2007, Air Quality Within Commercial Aircraft, defines requirements for air quality in commercial passenger aircraft carrying 20 or more passengers, and specifies measurement and testing methods in order to establish compliance with the standard. The voluntary standard will help protect airline passengers and crews by addressing issues such as temperature, moisture, cabin pressure, air contaminants and ventilation. ASHRAE Standard 161 also considers chemical, physical and biological contaminants that can affect air quality in the high-density environment of an airplane cabin.

Laser Beam Welding
Lasers are used in variety of applications serving the military, medical, electronic and automotive industries, as well as many others. These industries have profited from advancements in laser beam welding, a technique used to join multiple pieces of metal through the use of a high power density versatile process capable of welding carbon, alloy and stainless steels, aluminum and titanium.

A recently released American National Standard from the American Welding Society (AWS), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, is intended to protect welders by outlining proper laser beam welding specifications and procedures. AWS C7.4/C7.4M: 2008, Process Specification and Operator Qualification for Laser Beam Welding, provides guidelines for applicable specifications, requirements, fabrication, and equipment calibration and maintenance. The standard also discusses safety, quality examination, approval of work and delivery of work.

AWS is a non-profit organization working to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes including brazing, soldering, thermal spraying, ceramics, lamination and robotics. AWS membership includes engineers, scientists, educators, researchers, welders, inspectors, welding foremen, business executives and sales associates.
