NIST Awards Four Universities Funding for Standards Education

1/17/2018

The U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Standards Services Curricula Development Cooperative Agreement Program has awarded approximately $266,000 in grants to four universities nationwide, as part of its effort to support standards education and curricula for undergraduate and graduate students.

The program, which has granted awards exceeding $1.8 million since 2012, supports curricula development to integrate content on documentary standards and standardization processes into courses, modules, seminars and learning resources, including sustainable approaches, methods and models that can be replicated and/or built upon by other educational programs into undergraduate and graduate curricula at U.S. colleges and universities.

The 2018 recipients are Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, Ohio), Michigan State University (East Lansing, Michigan), Oklahoma State University (Stillwater, Oklahoma), and Texas A&M University.

ANSI Supports Standards in the Classroom

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) also has a key role in fostering and supporting standardization education efforts. In its oversight of various educational initiatives, ANSI Committee on Education (COE) participates in interactive workshops, to raise awareness of standards education within campus communities

ANSI's 2018 Student Paper and Video Competition is open to post-secondary students of all disciplines, and requires applicants to submit essays that exemplify the 2018 theme: "Standards in a Changing World." The deadline is April 27, 2018.

The www.ansi.org/students page provides K-12 learning resources for free download, to help spread the word to students and educators about the critical role of standards in their everyday lives. Extensive listings of additional standardization education efforts, including free e-learning courses and resources, are available on ANSI's standardslearn.org portal.

ANSI also provides free access for faculty and students to any defined group of standards currently available in the collections of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) through its University Outreach Program.
