ANAB Chosen by DHS for Emergency Preparedness Accreditation Program

New York, Jul 31, 2008

The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) – a joint partnership of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ) – has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to operate a new program that accredits and certifies private sector entities for preparedness.

The program is an initiative based on Public Law 110-53, “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007.” The law calls for the development of a private sector-led voluntary certification program for all-hazards business emergency preparedness that will serve as confirmation of business preparedness.

Operating under contract to DHS, the ANAB accreditation program will allow private sector organizations to demonstrate compliance with voluntary preparedness and business continuity standards and requirements through formal certification and other means. It will assess the organization’s level of conformity with these standards, including separate classifications and methods of certification to be used for small businesses.

In addition to providing accreditation, ANAB will also oversee the certification process and monitor the operations of third parties that conduct separate certifications for disaster/emergency management and business continuity programs.

A list of accredited certification organizations maintained by ANAB will be publicly available.

The contract is effective for one base year with two additional option years. For more information, view the ANAB press release.

The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is the U.S. accreditation body for management systems. ANAB accredits certification bodies (CBs) for ISO 9001 quality management systems, ISO 14001 environmental management systems, ISO 22000 food safety management system, ISO 28000 supply chain security management systems, ISO/IEC 20000-1 information technology service management systems, ISO/IEC 27001 information security management systems, ANSI/AIHA Z10 occupational health and safety management systems, and numerous industry-specific requirements.

ANAB’s conformity assessment services also include accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, and reference material producers through Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services, LLC (ACLASS).
