June ANSI Caucus to Feature David Karmol, Standards Advisor for Iraq

New York, May 30, 2007

On Friday June 1, the ANSI Caucus will feature David L. Karmol, standards advisor to Iraq with the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office (IRMO) at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Mr. Karmol, who is returning from one-year assignment assisting Iraqi government ministries in building a coherent system of standards and conformity assessment, will discuss the reconstruction effort and take questions regarding his assignment.

As a short-term employee of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Karmol worked with U.S. embassy officials in the central Green Zone to increase technical capabilities and establish a functioning standardization infrastructure. His efforts support the Iraqi Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (COSQC - the national standards body), the Ministry of Housing and Construction, the Ministry of Civil Defense, and other standards setting or “consuming” ministries.

Before leaving for his assignment in Iraq, Mr. Karmol served as vice president of public policy and government affairs at the American National Standards Institute. Prior to joining ANSI in 2001, he spent ten years as general counsel and director of public affairs at the National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI). Mr. Karmol also served as press secretary and special assistant to the director of the United States Mint; general counsel for the Can Manufacturers Institute; associate counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee; member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and assistant prosecuting attorney in Franklin County, Ohio.

The June Caucus event will begin at 12:00 noon with general networking; lunch will be served promptly at 12:30 pm. The National Press Club is located at 529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor (Zenger Room).
